FAQ

1. Am I eligible to adopt a child?

  • The eligibility requirements for adoption are:
    • the child must be below 21 years old and single;
    • the applicant must be at least 25 years old; and
    • the applicant must be at least 21 years older (but not more than 50 years older) than the child.
  • Solitary male applicants are prohibited from adopting female children and only married couples are allowed to jointly adopt children.
  • Notwithstanding the above, the Court has the power to make exceptions to the general rule where the child and the applicant are blood relatives, as well as in cases where both parties to the marriage are at least 25 years old, and they are trying to jointly adopt a child whose age is less than 21 years below their respective ages.

2. Can I adopt my stepchild?

Yes, you can adopt your stepchild.

If your stepchild is a Singapore citizen, the process is the same as adopting a local child.

If your stepchild is a foreign citizen, the process will follow that of adopting a foreign child.

You can apply to MSF to waive the Home Study Report (HSR) if you are a Singapore Citizen. This is not applicable to foreigners adopting their stepchildren.

3. How long does it take for the adoption process to be complete?

Usually it takes around 9-12 months, or longer depending on the circumstances.
